Common Causes of Knee Pain

Early detection is crucial for prompt intervention, which can prevent complications and improve treatment outcomes. Therefore, it is important to recognise the signs and symptoms of knee pain, which may manifest as:

While sharp knee pain is typically short-lived, in some cases, persistent sharp stabbing pain in the knee may indicate more serious damage such as torn knee cartilage, knee bursitis, knee fracture, nerve issues, and others.
Sharp and Stabbing Pain

Clicking or Popping Sounds

In certain instances, popping may signal a ligament or a meniscus tear, often stemming from sports injuries or high-energy accidents. These occurrences are frequently accompanied by pain and discomfort.

Swelling & Inflammation

Arthritis, a progressively worsening condition, is frequently the main cause of sudden knee inflammation. However, there are cases where swelling may signal a more serious underlying condition, particularly when it occurs without any apparent reason.

Moving or Shifting

Suddenly changing direction with a planted foot can cause a dislocated knee, leading to a sensation of movement while walking. This can result in potentially severe injuries like torn ligaments, broken blood vessels, and damaged nerves.

FAQS

Questions You might Ask

Check out our list of commonly asked questions to find answers to any general queries you may have.

How can I tell if my knee pain is serious?

Never overlook knee pain, considering the crucial role knees play in daily activities and exercise.

Timely medical attention is imperative for persistent pain or swelling, reduced mobility, instability, difficulty bearing full weight, deformities, or if fever accompanies redness, pain, and swelling.

Listening to our bodies is crucial, as pain signals that something might be wrong. Pushing through the pain barrier can exacerbate injuries. It’s optimal to address injuries at the first sign of discomfort; additional strain may worsen the condition and hinder recovery.

Firstly, the doctor conducts a physical exam to locate pain, assess mobility, and check the strength of the affected area. Medical history is reviewed for underlying conditions. In some cases, X-rays or MRIs may be needed for a clearer understanding of the condition and accurate treatment advice.

The timeline for returning to work or sports after an injury varies based on your age, the treatment received, and your health before the incident. It’s essential not to rush recovery, as it may lead to re-injury or complications.

Your doctor will collaborate with you to develop a thorough recuperation schedule, ensuring a gradual and effective healing process.

First, we would have to assess the cause and severity of knee pain through clinical examination, ultrasound and possibly MRI. A short course of anti-inflammatory medication, a brace, and physiotherapy may suffice for mild cases. Surgery is only necessary for severe cases or conditions unresponsive to the measures above.
